| nob |
dc.description.abstract | This paper investigates the prevalence of sexual harassment and other violations in youth sports, which so far has received limited attention in research. We analyzed data from the survey Young in Oslo 2021 (response rate = 53%, age 13–19). Participants who were active in sports at the time of the survey (n = 2,283) were asked to indicate if they had been threatened, bullied or socially excluded, or exposed to sexual harassment and assault in sports during the past year. We examine (1) the prevalence of exposure to sexual harassment and bullying in youth sports, (2) differences in exposure according to gender, socio-economic status, immigrant background, individual sports versus team sports and training load, and (3) who the athletes report as the perpetrator. The analyses show that more than ten percent had received negative, inappropriate or hurtful sexual comments. A similar proportion had been threatened, bullied or experienced social exclusion. Four percent had experienced unwanted sexual touching, while three percent of participants attending upper secondary school (the question was only posed to this group) had experienced «another form of sexual assault». Overall, the analyses show that youth sports – in addition to facilitating positive experiences – also is an arena where a notable share of young people are exposed to violations. | en_US |
