Prevention of childhood obesity is an international public health priority given the significant impact of obesity on short- and long-term functioning, health and wellbeing. Although recommended in several recent reviews, school-based obesity prevention interventions targeting physical activity and diet have been tested with mixed results. The overall aim of the HEalth in Adolescents (HEIA) study was to design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive intervention program to promote a healthy weight development among young adolescents (11 to 13 year olds). This thesis investigates correlates of weight status and effects of the HEIA intervention program on physical activity and body composition. Furthermore, the validity of the physical activity assessment tool, the ActiGraph accelerometer, was investigated in a separate study.no_NO
